Gilbert worked on the farm until World War I. After suffering flu, pleurisy, pneumonia and subsequent surgery in the service, he returned to North Branch. There he ran a confectionery store with pool parlor from 1921 to 1931. It was located in the small two story building on the south side of North Branch's main street (Highway #95) that later housed Jim's Shoe Store for many years. Lawrence Swenson was a young boy then and remembers the sign saying ”Gil's Confectionery.” Lawrence would stop there with his brother who bought his Bull Durham tobacco from Gil. What made this experience memorable to Lawrence was how Gil always paid special attention to him and other kids who came to the store. Gil eventually went back to farming and milked pure bred Holsteins.
